I am dedicated to communicating, inspiring and educating as many people as possible through the world of Art. I have always viewed visual art as a tool for growth and self expression. I am fortunate to experience that growth and inspiration at my job daily. I've worked as a Visual Arts teacher at Millbrook High School, since 2008. Teaching has given me the opportunity to empower 1,000s of children with the skills that Visual Art has to offer.
My family has lived in Raleigh for over 4 generations. I graduated from Meredith College in 2002 with a degree in Arts Education, and K-12 Art NC License. I began my teaching career at St. Michael's Catholic School in Cary from 2002-2004. I then taught at Cary High School from 2004-2007. I am currently a Visual Arts teachers at Millbrook High School. I have been the Art Club Advisor and Art Chair of the International Festival since 2009.
Since 2002 I have taught all areas of studio art. In Visual Arts I invest a large amount of time towards observational drawing and painting skills. Students work on large collaboration projects, and explore printmaking, sculpture and art history. In my Sculpture / Ceramics program we utilize all types of materials to create 3-dimensional work, including cardboard, cans, plastic, wire, plaster, and of course clay. My passion is creating sculpture out of recycled materials. This process shows students the power of using what was considered trash in new and inventive ways to create works of Art. I believe art develops valuable innovation, collaboration and communication skills. These skills offer people of all backgrounds and developmental levels the ability to transcend differences and boundaries.
As for my own artwork, I have always loved Lettering by hand. I have created "Specials" boards for coffee shops since I was a teenager. In the past year, I was hired by Jimmy V's in Downtown Raleigh to create their entrance "Wall of Quotes" and their Menu board. I am also commissioned to update "Events" board for the Lobby of the Sheraton in downtown Raleigh. The board is created with acrylic paint pens but has the look of chalk. I have enjoyed working for Jimmy V's and the Sheraton and look forward to creating the "Events" board every month. My personal artwork is a variety of drawings, paintings with mixed media, printmaking and sculpture.
